When you open a Spaceship account, we're required by law to verify your identity. Here's what you need and what to expect during the process.
Why we verify your identity
Australian anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws require financial institutions such as Spaceship to collect and verify certain information about you. This is standard practice across the finance industry.
We use the details you provide, like your legal name, home address, and date of birth, to confirm your identity against various data sources. If we can't verify you from those details alone, we'll ask you to provide a copy of a government-issued ID through the Spaceship app.
We handle all your information in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
What ID you'll need
In most cases, we can verify you automatically using your personal details. If we need additional documents, you'll need to provide two of the following:
Australian passport
Foreign passport
Australian driver's licence
Medicare card
We can only accept the documents listed above. Bank statements and other documents aren't valid for identity verification.
Who can open a Spaceship account
You don't need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, but you do need to:
Be an Australian tax resident.
Have an Australian residential address.
Hold an Australian bank account.
Have an Australian phone number.
How long verification takes
We'll try to verify your identity instantly during sign-up. If we need more information, verification usually completes within one to two business days of receiving everything we need. In some cases, a manual review is required, which can take a little longer.
If you're still waiting after a few business days, get in touch and we'll let you know if anything else is needed.
Tips for a smooth verification
